O’Donoghue Dermatology just broke ground on the second phase of a major expansion.

The expansion began in the summer of 2013 with the addition of a phototherapy room, 2 new patient rooms, an on-premise sterilization lab, a new physician assistant office, and a larger reception area where they can host educational seminars which are open to the public.

The Field Road office doubled its footprint in 2013 and is now poised to add another 3,000 sq. ft. The current expansion, which is scheduled for completion on February 1, 2019, will bring with it a relaxation room for patients undergoing Mohs surgery, a laser operating suite, and an aesthetician suite where they will offer AquaGold® microchannel technology, Aqua Peels, Reveal® Imager 3D skin analysis, Zerona® laser body sculpting, Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy, and GentleWaves® LED skin remodeling.

Since Dr. J. Morgan O’Donoghue opened the medical and cosmetic dermatology practice at 1952 Field Road in Sarasota in 2007, O’Donoghue Dermatology has more than doubled in size, with a physical expansion in 2013 and the addition of several medical and support personnel. BOTOX works by inhibiting the release of neurotransmitters, a naturally occurring protein that is released from our nerves and activates our muscles. Individuals have differing amounts of neurotransmitter receptors in their muscles, so each person will see a slightly quicker or slower response to BOTOX.

Most patients will respond within 72 hours of a treatment, but it can take up to a week for the effects to be noticeable. Typically, the best response is reached around 10 days after administration and last about 3 months, but it can last up to four months.

The effects of BOTOX can last anywhere from 2 to 6 months, but, for most people, it lasts about 90 days. With regular use (3 to 4 times per year), the injected muscles will eventually thin or atrophy, making the treatments last several weeks longer.

The way in which the BOTOX is mixed can also affect the longevity of the treatment. If the product is diluted too much, it may not be effective. I like to mix the BOTOX with only a small amount of saline, so I can place the concentrated mixture exactly where I want it. This also reduces the possibility of it migrating to unwanted areas.

The effectiveness and longevity of the treatment is also affected by the way in which the product is handled and stored. Once mixed, BOTOX must be handled with care; if the mixture is agitated, it will not work as well. It is also best to keep it refrigerated.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US. Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer - combined!

Skin cancer can affect anyone, regardless of skin color, gender or age. In fact, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime. These facts may be alarming, but because skin cancer is, for the most part, a behavioral disease, it is highly preventable.

About 86% of melanoma and 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. That’s why embracing proper sun protection is critical all year-round.

Skin cancer can almost always be cured when it’s found and treated early. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to prevent skin cancer or detect it early on.

Follow these Prevention Guidelines to stay sun-safe:

• - Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.
• - Don’t get burned.
• - Avoid tanning and never use UV tanning beds.
• - Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
• - Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
• - Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every 2 hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.

Resistance to BOTOX is extremely rare. The most common reason why the product fails is the technique of the individual injecting it. If the BOTOX is not placed into the muscle or the if the proper amount is not used – it won’t work well. Also, a good understanding of the patient is essential for good results.

Another reason why people might feel that BOTOX did not work for them is a misunderstanding of what the product can do. Some patients are under the impression that BOTOX can treat all lines and wrinkles. In fact, BOTOX is best for treating wrinkles that form when you move the muscle, i.e. when you frown, raise your eyebrows or smile. Wrinkles present at rest may improve after several years of using BOTOX every three months, but they will not go away immediately.

For wrinkles that are present at rest, other adjunctive therapies like lasers and wrinkle fillers are more appropriate.
